Andrew Manze

- artist in residence

Andrew Manze
The first modern super star of the baroque violin
San Francisco Examiner
Andrew Manze has been working with the Swedish Chamber Orchestra as Artist in Residence since 1999. As one of today´s most passionate and articulate advocates of early music his knowledge and skills have played an important role in broadening the stylistic palette of the ensemble whilst maintaining their chamber music quality.

From early on the Swedish Chamber Orchestra realised the benefits of establishing an on-going working relationship with specialists in various fields not only to help develop the ensemble´s musical style but also to keep the musicians abreast of the musical world at large. This has been particularly important to an orchestra which is not based in a major European city, where different musical experiences are readily on offer every day. Yet Örebro offers a unique environment where programmes can be developed and performed away from the international limelight which benefits both the ensemble and the visiting artist.

With the luxury of regular and intense time to work together Andrew Manze  and the musicians of the Swedish Chamber Orchestra have explored an array of repertoire which has recently combined church sonatas by Biber and Mozart, Bach and Mozart keyboard concertos (with Jonathan Biss as soloist), suites by Bach and Telemann, music by Beethoven and his contemporaries and dance music by Zelenka and Mozart.  In 2009 Manze led the Swedish Chamber Orchestra in concertante performances of Beethoven´s Fidelio with Nina Stemme in the title role of Leonore and including Matthias Zachariassen and Lisa Larsen in the cast. These Örebro and Stockholm performances celebrated Andrew Manze’s 10th anniversary with the ensemble.

On 15 and 17 April 2010 Andrew Manze will lead the Swedish Chamber Orchestra in two programmes with guest soloist Angela Hewitt performing the Schuman Piano Concerto in A minor together with Polish composer, Grazyna Bacewic’s Divertimento and Beethoven’s Symphony no. 4.
